Four must-see places in the Sunshine Coast hinterland

The Sunshine Coast Hinterland is increasingly home to a vast array of adventure seekers. Hyped on Instagram inspiration or fresh on the scent of a hot tip from a friend, the hinterland here has something for young and old.

I’ve compiled a list of what I think are some of the very best locations for a relaxing day in the hills of the sunny coast.

Gardners Falls

1. Gardners Falls

Gardners falls has been a long time local favourite and attracts many excited waterfall chasers.

A cascading stream flowing from the picturesque Obi Obi Creek twists and turns and finally empties into a large natural pool. Here you’ll find yourself towered over by lush vegetation and other keen explorers.

2. Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve

Here you’ll be immersed in 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest. This provides a living window into what a large portion of this area once resembled.

A well-maintained path blends seamlessly into its surroundings. This will guide you through an assortment of towering trees, dangling vines and thick canopy.
Any nature enthusiast will find themselves right at home here with such a plethora of beautiful views. Rainforest aside, The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve offers one of the best views over the Glass House Mountains. This makes it the perfect spot to enjoy lunch with a view, from a fantastic café.

3. Montville

Montville is a sleepy hinterland town that comes alive on the weekend with swarms of visitors from near and far. It offers stunning panoramic views up and down the coast. Here you’ll find some of the best restaurant views in South East Queensland.

HOT TIP: Mayfield Patisserie and Chocolates, located at the top of the main street, serve up not only award-winning sausage rolls but also one of the best views too. The main street is boarded by small boutiques, galleries and an old pub perfect for the weary traveller.

4. Mapleton Falls National Park

This hidden gem is an absolute cracker. The built-out platform offers a jaw-dropping view over the massive 120m high waterfall which rains down into the valley below.

When you’re finished gawking, head into the rainforest for a short walk. Before you know it, everything the nature enthusiast craves will be at your finger tips. We highly recommend the Wompoo circuit, a 1.3km return walk which is well-trodden and demonstrates the beauty of this space.
